English actor Bernard Hill, best known for his roles as Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic and King Theoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has passed away at the age of 79. Hill's family confirmed his death on Sunday.
Born in Manchester, England, in 1944, Hill began his acting career on stage. He made his film debut in 1971's Straw Dogs, but it was his portrayal of the stoic Captain Smith in Titanic that brought him international acclaim.
Hill's other notable film roles include Gandhi (1982), The English Patient (1996), and The Ladykillers (2004). He also had a successful career on television, appearing in series such as Wuthering Heights (1992) and Merlin (2008-2012).
