F1 Canada Qualifying

Ricciardo takes on the heat and Verstappen in Canadian Grand Prix pole battle

Verstappen seals pole position in Canada with identical time to Russell

Daniel Ricciardo pushed his Red Bull F1 car to the limit, qualifying fifth at a tricky Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Max Verstappen is on course to further extend his lead in the Formula One title race after grabbing pole position in Montreal.

The Dutchman produced an imperious lap in qualifying in Canada to secure top spot ahead of Mercedes' George Russell.

Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, will go up third with Fernando Alonso of Alpine alongside him on the front row.

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo put in a great performance to secure fifth position behind Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who despite a five-place penalty for a gearbox change will start sixth.

Lando Norris was seventh quickest for McLaren ahead of Kevin Magnussen of Haas and Sainz's Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who rounded out the top 10.

Qualifying was held in dry and sunny conditions, but rain is forecast for the race on Sunday.
