Detroit-Style Pizza: A Unique and Delicious Invention

A Detroit Original

Detroit-style pizza, with its distinctive square shape, crispy caramelized edges, and thick layer of sauce and cheese, is a culinary creation unlike any other. Its origins can be traced back to 1946, when Gus and Anna Guerra, owners of the former speakeasy Buddy's Rendezvous, developed this unique pizza style.

Inside the Pan

Detroit-style pizza is made in a rectangle steel pan, giving it its signature square shape. The dough has a high hydration level, resulting in a bubbly texture when baked. The toppings are placed in a reverse order, with the sauce on top of the cheese.

Toppings Galore

Detroit-style pizza is known for its thick layer of toppings, including brick cheese, pepperoni, and red sauce. The brick cheese, a buttery and tangy variety, is a staple of this pizza style. The pepperoni, cut into small squares, adds a savory and spicy flavor.

The red sauce, typically made with crushed tomatoes and spices, provides a rich and flavorful base for the pizza. The combination of these toppings creates a decadent and satisfying culinary experience.
