On this day in 1989, the San Francisco Bay Area was forever changed by a devastating earthquake known as the Loma Prieta earthquake. With a magnitude of 6.9, the earthquake rocked the region, causing widespread damage and taking the lives of 63 individuals.

The earthquake occurred along the San Andreas Fault, a major seismic zone that runs through California. The epicenter was located near the cities of Santa Cruz and Watsonville, approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco. The shaking was felt throughout the Bay Area, from San Francisco to San Jose and beyond.

The earthquake caused significant damage to infrastructure, including collapsed bridges, buckled roadways, and damaged buildings. The Marina District in San Francisco was particularly hard-hit, with hundreds of buildings destroyed or damaged. The iconic Cypress Viaduct, a double-decker freeway, collapsed, killing 42 people.
